Installing VMware vSphere 8

VMware vSphere 8 is the latest edition to the VMware vSphere family. As you already know, by consolidating physical servers and workloads onto a smaller number of physical hosts, vSphere can help reduce hardware costs, increase efficiency, and improve agility. In this blog, I'll cover the prerequisites for installing vSphere 8, discuss some of the benefits of using this platform, and walk through a high-level install. This is intended for beginners to VMware. 

Overview of vSphere 8 Features and Benefits

vSphere 8 is the latest version of VMware's virtualization platform, which is used by many organizations to run their applications and services. Here are some of the new features and benefits that might be introduced in vSphere 8:
  • Native Kubernetes Support: vSphere 8 includes native Kubernetes support, which means that you can now deploy and manage Kubernetes clusters directly on vSphere. This integration provides users with a consistent experience for deploying and managing both traditional and modern applications.
  • Enhanced Security: vSphere 8 offers enhanced security features, including secure boot for ESXi hosts, virtual TPMs, and encrypted vMotion. These security features provide better protection against security threats and help to ensure that workloads running on vSphere are secure.
  • Improved Performance: vSphere 8 includes several performance improvements, such as increased scalability, faster vMotion, and improved DRS (Distributed Resource Scheduler) algorithms. These improvements help to ensure that workloads are running at optimal performance levels.
  • Simplified Management: vSphere 8 introduces a new HTML5-based vSphere Client, which provides a modern and intuitive user interface for managing vSphere. This new client is designed to simplify management tasks and improve productivity for vSphere administrators.
  • Cloud-Native Apps Support: vSphere 8 offers improved support for cloud-native apps, including integration with VMware Tanzu, a platform for building and running modern applications on Kubernetes.
  • Cost-Effective: vSphere 8 offers a flexible licensing model that allows users to purchase only the resources they need. This helps to reduce costs and increase the ROI for vSphere deployments.

Prerequisites 

Prerequisites for installing vSphere 8: Before you install vSphere 8, you need to ensure that your hardware and software meet the following prerequisites:
  1. Hardware requirements: You will need a server with at least two CPUs, each with at least four cores, and a minimum of 16GB of RAM. You will also need a storage device with at least 20GB of free space.
  2. Network requirements: You will need at least one network interface card (NIC) for management traffic, and at least one NIC for virtual machine traffic.
  3. Software requirements: You will need a 64-bit operating system, such as Windows Server 2016 or later, and the latest version of VMware vCenter Server. You will also need the latest version of VMware ESXi.

Once you have verified that your hardware and software meet these prerequisites, you can proceed with the installation.

Steps to Install

Steps to Install vSphere 8: (High-level steps to install vSphere 8)
  1. Download the vSphere 8 installer from the VMware website: Visit the VMware website and navigate to the vSphere 8 product page. Click the download button to download the installer file. You will need to log in with your VMware account credentials or create a new account if you do not have one.
  2. Mount the ISO file or extract the contents of the installer to a directory on your server: If you have downloaded the ISO file, mount it to your server's virtual CD/DVD drive. You can do this by right-clicking the ISO file and selecting the "Mount" option. If you have extracted the contents of the installer to a directory on your server, navigate to that directory.
  3. Launch the installer and follow the prompts to select the installation type, accept the license agreement, and enter the required information: Double-click the setup file to launch the vSphere 8 installer. Select the installation type, such as vCenter Server, Platform Services Controller, or ESXi host. Accept the license agreement by checking the box and clicking the "Next" button. Enter the required information, such as the hostname or IP address of the server where you want to install vSphere.
  4. Select the installation destination and configure the storage settings: Select the destination where you want to install vSphere 8, such as a local disk or a remote storage device. Configure the storage settings, such as the partition layout and the datastore where you want to store virtual machines. You can also choose to use the VMware vSAN storage solution if it is available.
  5. Configure the network settings, including the IP address and subnet mask for the vCenter Server Appliance: Configure the network settings, such as the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway for the vCenter Server Appliance. You can also configure DNS and NTP settings. If you are using DHCP, configure the DHCP settings.
  6. Configure the vCenter Server settings, including the administrator username and password: Configure the vCenter Server settings, such as the administrator username and password. You can also configure the database settings, such as the database type, name, and credentials. If you are using the embedded Postgres database, you can skip this step.
  7. Verify the installation settings and start the installation process: Verify the installation settings to ensure they are correct. You can review and edit the settings by clicking the "Back" button. Once you are satisfied with the settings, click the "Install" button to start the installation process.
  8. After the installation is complete, you can log in to the vSphere Client to begin managing your virtualized environment: Open a web browser and navigate to the URL of the vSphere Client. Log in to the vSphere Client using the administrator username and password you configured during the installation.

​You can now start managing your virtualized environment, such as creating virtual machines, managing virtual networks, and monitoring performance.

  1. Improved resource utilization: vSphere allows organizations to consolidate multiple workloads onto a smaller number of physical hosts, reducing hardware costs and improving resource utilization.

  5. Greater agility: vSphere enables organizations to quickly provision new virtual machines, clone existing machines, and migrate workloads between hosts, making it easier to respond to changing business needs.
